Tortuguero National Park is an important area of the country due to its remaining tropical rainforests. In addition, the park is crisscrossed by a beautifully scenic natural lagoon and navigable waterway network that forms the habitat of animal species such as land turtles, manatees or sea cows, crocodiles, a wide variety of crabs and 52 different species of freshwater fish, including the gaspar fish.
The park includes a 5-km beach where the main attraction is the arrival of green and leatherback turtles that lay eggs along its shore.
