Energy and natural beauty
This is a land of volcanoes, cloud forests and rainforest, where you will find high waterfalls and powerful rivers surrounded by plants and wildlife. The generous flora and fauna provide ample tourist activities in this region of Costa Rica, including horseback riding tours, canopy tours, hiking, mountain biking, water sports and plant and wildlife observation. The region encompasses the fertile lands of Sarapiquí, Guatuso, Arenal and Monteverde, and extends to the volcanic zone of Tilarán and Guanacaste.
One of the main attractions of the region is Arenal Volcano. At 1,633 meters, this perfectly coned volcano is constantly active, and offers viewing of eruptions during the day and on clear nights. From the Arenal Reserve at the base of the volcano, you can enjoy views of the intense red lava and frequent eruptions while walking near the old lava paths in the national park. Here, an 87-km-long artificial lagoon known for its scenic beauty offers a perfect complement to enjoy the area, with water sports such as diving, kayaking, sportfishing and windsurfing. With winds that can reach speeds of up to 72 kilometers per hour, Lake Arenal is one of the best places in the world to windsurf.

Nearby, the Tabacón River and its several hot springs offer relaxing and therapeutic experiences to visitors. Another beautiful attraction in the area is Chato Peak, an inactive volcanic crater containing a blue-green lagoon.

Also in the Northern Zone is the wonderful town of Monteverde,
where a biological reserve of the same name protects approximately
400 bird species, including the resplendent quetzal. Founded
by a group of Quakers in the early 1950s, the town is known
for its conservation efforts, simple way of life and respect
for nature, which is reflected today in its environmental
education, recycling and ecotourism projects, legacies of
the customs of Monteverde’s founders.
Another important aspect of the region is its agricultural production, cattle and dairy farming, industries that produce a wide variety of products including delicious cheeses.
Also recommended are the region’s well-known local fairs, where one can enjoy traditional dances, bull riding and local food and beverage stands.
The Northern Zone comprises evergreen forests and marshy areas such as Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge in the plains of Guatuso, a recommended destination for observing a wide variety of marine animals and their ecosystems.
